Killarney Colts Commissioner & Head Coach, Kipchage “Kippy” Gardiner, says that “living in the Bahamas I see that our youth are too idle with no extra curricular activities other than baseball and basketball which some kids say is boring and with nothing else to do. Kids are going astray using drugs and committing crimes at a very young age and I want to do something about it.”

Gardiner, a father of three and married for eight years, spent eleven years as a police officer and knows first hand why kids should always have options of constructive things to do with their time.

“I love children and [I know] teaching football builds discipline and forges character. From my past experiences I feel I could be a mentor to some of them who feel like there is no hope. I want to be able to help bring them hope again”, says Gardiner.

“I think it’s great that the organizers of the Bahamas American Youth Football Alliance decided to establish an American youth football league in the Bahamas because it shows right away that more than just Bahamians and government, which has stymied our youth growth movement, care about the future of our youth. It also gives kids a great way to meet new friends and stay out of trouble and creating football clubs will bring communities together and will help put and end to some of the senseless violence through friendship and camaraderie.”

Gardiner says, “...anything to help the youth of the future should be worth anyone's time to volunteer; to teach kids morals, social as well as athletic skills, that would carry them for the rest of their lives and will groom respectful men and women who will be our future leaders.”
